  1. A caller to today's Moneytalk program, as a non-spouse recipient of an inherited IRA, asked "over what period is he required to take the Required Minimum Distributions that the deceased former owner of the IRA was taking while alive?"

My trusty 2007 CCH U.S. Master Tax Guide provides the following answer:

"Any remaining benefit payable to a ("IRA") beneficiary may be payable OVER THE LONGER OF (1) The life expectancy of the beneficiary, or (2) the life expectancy of the deceased IRA participant."

Bob response that the caller would find his answer in the "Uniform Lifetime Table" of distribution periods based upon age was too general to provide the caller with the useful answer he needed.

I'm unaware of any changes to the above rule since 2007.

    Best wishes,

    P

  2. "It's becoming increasingly apparent that 2011 won't go down in the history books as a typical pre-presidential election year. Since 1900, the S&P has tacked on an average of 11.3% (not counting dividends) in the third year of a president's term. So far this year, the market is down 7.9%."
